Morrison Resigns in Shame

As you probably know, Paul Morrison announced yesterday his intention to resign as Attorney General early next year.

Caught up in an abortion-sex scandal, Paul Morrison at first rejected my calls and those of others to resign. However, it quickly became clear to Morrison that he did not have the political staying power of a Bill Clinton. Nor does it appear he can escape the legal problems created by his actions. Not only is he accused of sexual harassment (for the second known episode of his career), but even more legally serious, are the allegations of case tampering by Morrison on behalf of his largest campaign supporter (to the tune of approximately $1 million) – George Tiller. A special prosecutor has been already appointed in Johnson County to investigate these extremely serious charges – and federal authorities are investigating the incidents as well.

What does all this mean?

  • Kansans aren’t quite ready for Clinton-like personal escapades and abuses of power. Philandering public officials who seem above the law still are unacceptable to the good people of our great state – thank goodness

  • Kathleen Sebelius has many questions to answer. Why did she recruit Morrison to run for A.G.? Why did she ignore the sexual harassment accusations swirling around Morrison? Does she plan on appointing a replacement for Morrison that is also serious indebted to George Tiller and other indicted individuals?

  • Mark Parkinson has many questions to answer. Why the silence, Mr. Lieutenant Governor? The media has yet to report that Parkinson actually represented Morrison in his first defense against sexual harassment. What did Parkinson know and when did he know it? What are the odds that the legal defense team for serious sexual harassment charges would serve as the 2nd and 3rd highest ranking officials in the State of Kansas?

  • The leadership of the Kansas Democrat Party has many questions to answer. When its Chairman Larry Gates celebrated in recruiting Morrison to run for AG – did he just ignore these types of personal escapades? In fact, when one recalls that Gates/Sebelius/Parkinson were so enthralled to host the impeached President Bill Clinton last February at their annual Kansas Democrat get-together – they clearly seem out of step with Kansans who find such personal and potentially illegal behavior abhorrent.

For now, justice has been served. No one should be above the law – not even those with the most powerful political connections - not even the most profitable industry in Kansas – and not even the Attorney General.

No man or woman who is under a legal and moral cloud like Paul Morrison is deserving of public office in Kansas. Let us hope now that the legal system may move forward on the merits of the cases that Morrison, Parkinson, and Sebelius continue to fight to this day.
