Huelskamp Urges Opposition to Sebelius’ HHS Nomination

Topeka (KS) – State Senator -- and Congressional Candidate -- Tim Huelskamp today made clear his opposition to the nomination of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

"Sebelius' extreme positions on abortion -- as well as her close ties to a late-term abortion provider -- should disqualify her from running this nation's care policy. At the very least, it should disqualify her from receiving any conservative support," said Huelskamp.

Gov. Sebelius is close allies with Dr. George Tiller, who has been indicted for performing late-term abortions on underage girls.

"As a practicing Catholic and a conservative, I cannot in good conscience support this nomination or remain silent," said Huelskamp.

Huelskamp also believes there are serious issues regarding Sebelius' competence to manage HHS: "Despite serving eight years as Insurance Commissioner and six years as Governor, she oversaw no real health care reform," said Huelskamp. “In fact, her principal initiative has been proposed expansions, not reforms, of current government programs.”

Huelskamp has pledged to oppose Sebelius' nomination and to support conservative groups who are attempting to block it.

"The U.S. Senate should reject this nomination," said Huelskamp.
