Senator Huelskamp: U.S. Supreme Court
Gives Green Light to Photo ID for Voters
TOPEKA, KS – In a decisive 6-3 opinion issued earlier today, the United States Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Photo Identification requirements for Indiana voters. Considered one of the strictest photo ID measures in the nation, the Indiana law requires all voters to present a Photo ID in order to vote.
Senator Tim Huelskamp, author of similar ID proposals in Kansas, stated that today’s decision to uphold the Indiana law could mean Kansas’ efforts to pass a similar measure have been made easier. “This ruling will help clear the path to pass our photo ID bill in Kansas,” Huelskamp said shortly after the decision was rendered. “I’m pleased with the decision and excited over the prospect of getting similar legislation passed here at home this year. Every major argument against Photo ID has been addressed and dispensed by the high court.”
Huelskamp has crafted and passed multiple bills through the Kansas Senate that would require individuals voting in person to present a photo ID when they vote. "The high court’s ruling concludes that states have a valid interest in protecting the integrity and reliability of the electoral process,” Huelskamp continued. “Preventing voter fraud is a legitimate state interest and voter ID directly addresses the problem. When we require a photo ID for purchasing alcohol or cigarettes, getting on a plane, writing or cashing a check, or even renting a video, similar ID safeguards are reasonable to protect the integrity of something as important as our election system.”
Huelskamp noted three other states also have passed photo ID laws that have withstood court challenge – Arizona, Florida and Georgia. Legislation crafted by Senator Huelskamp, including SB 169, is modeled, in part, on all of these laws.
During the Veto Session, which begins this Wednesday, debate on this issue is expected in both the Kansas Senate and the Kansas House.
