Candidate for Congress joins state and federal legislators from all across the country in supporting the 2nd Amendment rights of all citizens
Fowler, KS – Sen. Tim Huelskamp (R-Fowler), who is seeking the Republican nomination for Congress in the first district for 2010, has officially signed on to an NRA-lead amicus curiae brief that will be sent to the Supreme Court in the case of McDonald vs. Chicago. Huelskamp is the first legislator in the state to sign on to this brief.
“I am extremely proud to join this effort in protecting our 2nd Amendment rights as the Founding Fathers intended – as an individual right,” said Huelskamp. “This Supreme Court ruling will have far-reaching implications not just for Chicago, but for all states and localities across America. No state or locality should be able to restrict law-abiding citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights.”
This crucial Supreme Court case will address the application of the 2nd Amendment to the states. In last year’s historic landmark decision, the Supreme Court struck down the D.C. gun ban in the case of District of Columbia vs. Heller. Unfortunately, this decision only applies to federal territories such as the District of Columbia. The McDonald case will determine whether or not the individual right that was affirmed in the Heller decision will be applied against states and localities that wish to infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens.
“I have been a strong and consistent champion for 2nd Amendment freedoms during my 13 years in the Senate, “ said Huelskamp. “I have always opposed gun bans and I urge the Court to come down on the side of individual liberty and freedom.”
Sen.Huelskamp has a long history of supporting the 2nd Amendment rights of his fellow Kansans. During this past legislative session, Huelskamp was a key Senate leader in passing a proposed constitutional amendment here in Kansas to protect our individual rights to gun ownership. That proposed constitution amendment will go before Kansas voters in November 2010.
Sen. Huelskamp is the only candidate for Congress to earn an “A+” rating from the National Rifle Association. Additionally, he has been endorsed by the Gun Owners of America for Congress. To read more about that endorsement, click here.
